At the beginning of this chapter the author states that from her research she notices that students created their own "community" or friend group since the beginning of college. She also says that there are activities that try to help build a "community" between students and create friend groups but that for the most part they don't work. I noticed this and interpreted that from the first chapter because i thought that most students want to create their own community based on their own values and not by a forced activity put in place by administration.
Also in this chapter she tells about her study of who students eat with. From my observations i noticed people eat with who they are comfortable with and who their friend groups are. This correlates with her research because she said that students usually eat with people who are similar to them by race or gender. She also interviewed students about their friend groups and asked if they had a diverse friend group and she found that most of them did not have an ethnically diverse friend group for example she stated that most white people usually have only white friends or 1 racially different friend. I think this is important because it shows that people gravitate toward things similar to them to make friends.
